June 21 Newsletter

6/21/2010

The City of New Orleans finds itself in a familiar position today.
Five years after Katrina, we are facing a new crisis taking place
south of the City. Although this time around we are not on the front
lines of the disaster, our City is already feeling the blow delivered
by the Deepwater Horizon oil leak.

On Friday, June 18th, I traveled to Plaquemines Parish with
Councilmember Jackie Clarkson, her daughter, actress Patricia
Clarkson, as well as C-Span. We first met with Billy Nungesser,
President of Plaquemines Parish, to discuss the details of the
clean-up and how his office is handling the emergency.
We boarded boats in Port Sulphur and saw firsthand the black
marsh that is usually a verdant green this time of year.
Large cakes of red crude oil floated past us, swirling in the water.
Further south, we motored past Cat Island, a pelican haven,
where the once endangered birds, perched above the water,
heir bellies shiny with oil. I think I speak for the entire
City Council when I say that we will do all in our power
to make this right.

Fielkow's Support Far-Reaching in Community

2/4/2010

Council President Arnie Fielkow started 2010 once again being named
New Orleans most popular elected official by New Orleans Magazine.
This honor was confirmed by WWL-TV when it was revealed that the
City’s Councilman at Large had a 73 percent favorability rating and was
the strong leader in the upcoming election for Council-at-Large.

The Alliance for Good Government, the Times Picayune, GAMBIT and
the New Orleans Tribune have all endorsed Arnie Fielkow as he seeks
his second term to the City Council. Voters will select two Council-
members-at-Large on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Perhaps best known as the former Executive Vice President of the New
Orleans Saints who valued the special relationship between New Orleans
fans and their beloved NFL football team, Councilman Fielkow has built
a reputation over the last four years as a “go-to” member of the City Council
on issues of good government, crime abatement and prevention, promoting
the city’s economic development and recreation programs, as well as pursuing
realistic budgeting.

Community groups like the Forum for Equality, the New Orleans Coalition, and
IDEA have endorsed the Councilman for his responsive leadership.

“It’s an honor for me to represent the interests of New Orleans. I am committed
to our recovery and our renaissance,” said Councilman Fielkow.

All labor organizations…from the AFL-CIO, SEIU and the Teamsters…as well
as Republicans and Democrats represented by the Greater New Orleans
Republicans, the Regular Democratic Organization, Crescent City Democrats
and the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee…are supporting the
Councilman.

His citywide support is in large part due to his commitment to growing the city
as a good place for jobs and families. As Chair of the City Council’s Economic
Development Committee, Councilman Fielkow has worked to build opportunities
for sustainable economic development, focusing on the expansion of international
trade in New Orleans, improving services and support for the city’s small businesses,
and the development of a downtown medical district. Councilman Fielkow is working
closely with various local business groups, the Office of Recovery and Development
Administration (ORDA) and the Mayor’s Administration to implement a public/private
partnership model for economic development, similar to structures already
successfully in place in cities such as Miami, Pittsburgh, Lafayette, LA and Jefferson
Parish, LA.

“In so many ways, Councilman Fielkow has shown the ability to do what is right for
a better New Orleans,” said entrepreneur Anthony Patton.

Young professional Jeff Good said, “He’s a model leader.”

Councilman Fielkow said, “I’m grateful for all the support citizens have shown over
the last few weeks of the campaign. I am asking for each person’s vote. It’s an
honor to serve at a time when our city is poised for great things.”

The Councilman’s re-election campaign kicked into high gear at the end of 2009.
It is the only citywide campaign to post four campaign headquarters in all corners
of Orleans Parish:

Main: 1522 St. Charles Ave.
West Bank: 3642 Gen. DeGaulle Ave.
New Orleans East Main: 10940 I-10 Service Rd.
New Orleans East Satellite: 14207 Chef Menteur Hwy.

Supporters are encouraged to pick up their black-and-gold Fielkow lawn signs and
t-shirts at the headquarters and volunteer with the Councilman as the campaign
winds up Feb. 6. His election night party will be at the Ballroom of the Royal Sonesta
on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, starting at 8 p.m., Sat., Feb. 6.
