Cao Still Only Republican Who Supported Health Care
3/23/2010
|
But does it matter now?
Congressman Anh Cao, who stood on his pro-life convictions, with the support of New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymand, and voted against the Senate healthcare reform bill, is still the only Republican who crossed party lines to support Obama's health reform efforts. Ironically, the bill he supported had tougher abortion restrictions, but included the more liberal public option. The Congressman was actually lobbying for revisions to the Senate bill to include concessions on these two issues. So by voting against the Senate bill, he joined all Louisiana House members, including Democrat Charlie Melancon, in voting "no". Does that give him cover? Interestingly, his invitation to the White House for the Easter Egg Hunt is still on!

Mary Landrieu Big Winner with Healthcare
3/23/2010
|
She played key role in shaping final bill
US Senator Mary Landrieu won key concessions as health care reform moved through the Senate. Biggest of these was removing the public option in favor of more market reforms to make private insurance more affordable and accessible. Her efforts also insured that America's drug supply will remain safe and untainted, as well as allowing manufacturers/researchers of biologic drugs, like our own Louisiana universities, important patent protections. It's a shame fellow Democrat Charlie Melancon did not join her in voting for this bill.

Sen. Carter Peterson in DC for Healthcare Bill Signing
3/23/2010
|
Peterson the only Louisiana State Legislator Attending Historic Event-
Today, President Barack Obama signs landmark legislation to reform our nation’s health care system. The bill will stop insurance company abuses, bring down the deficit, rein in health costs for families and small businesses, and create up to 4 million new private sector jobs over the next 10 years.
“This historic legislation will put Louisiana families and doctors back in charge of their health care choices by holding insurance companies accountable and stopping their worst practices – like denying you coverage because of a pre-existing condition, dropping your coverage when you get sick or arbitrarily hiking up your premiums,” said State Senator Karen Carter Peterson.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will finally expand coverage to the 894,000 Louisianans who do not have health insurance today. The bill will strengthen Medicare by filling in the “Medicare donut hole” and provide 653,000 Louisiana senior citizens access to free preventative health care through Medicare. Also, the bill includes a $300 million Louisiana Medicaid provision to help the state cover soaring Medicaid costs.
“I am honored to be invited by the White House to witness this historic achievement. Over seven presidents have tried to reform our health care system, and today, the wait is finally over,” said State Senator Peterson.

Sr. Jane Remsom is Cao Guest for Obama’s State of the Union Address
2/3/2010
|
Congressman Anh “Joseph” Cao (LA-2) welcomed Sr. Jane Remsom, Director of the New Orleans Chapter of Bread for the World, to Washington, DC as his guest for President Obama’s State of the Union Address Jan. 27.
Cao said: “Sr. Jane is the epitome of what today’s generation needs – generous, unselfish, and passionate volunteers who affect change for the benefit of all. I am honored to share today’s event with someone who has dedicated nearly three decades to those less fortunate.”
Known for her devotion to and activism for researching and fighting world hunger, Sr. Jane has worked to raise hunger awareness since the 1970s, including the organizing of the annual “Walk for the Hungry,” a four-mile walking pilgrimage against hunger. A New Orleans native, Sr. Jane is a member of the Congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Congressman Cao will take part in the 2010 Walk.
She has worked to raise awareness for the hungry and to actively help those, not only in New Orleans, but around the world.
“I am delighted to be here,” said Sr. Jane. “I first met him in a grocery store and in through church, and I knew right then that he was ‘my kind of elected official’. I think he thinks outside of the [DC] Beltway, and that is what our country needs. We need representatives that better the district they represent and not just fight party politics. I am delighted to be here for this once in a lifetime opportunity. I have been with Bread for the World since 1981, and I have never had an invitation to attend the State of the Union. This is something beyond my wildest imagination, and I am grateful to Congressman Cao for inviting me.”
Congressman Cao introduced Sr. Jane to President Barack Obama at the event.

Two Dudes in DC on Historic Day
12/10/2009
|
Public Option no longer an option!
Did they do it alone? Did Louisiana small businesses do
it alone? No, but they did it with a lot of help and leadership
from Senator Mary Landrieu. She's cancelled her visit to
Louisiana this weekend to stay and work on the compromise
she has played a key role in working out on healthcare
reform. The bill will give President Obama a significant win
and the people of the US a new, more affordable way to
get health insurance. The two healthcare reform dudes,
David Huguenel and Devin Johnson, say: "Thank you
small business owners for speaking up and THANK YOU
Senator Landrieu for listening to us."

Reid wants Landrieu read rollcall link...
But both Snowe and Nelson said their group of five to six centrists
is concerned about taking a procedural vote that would officially
bring the bill to the floor. Neither Snowe nor Nelson would name the
meeting attendees, saying the makeup has changed from day to day,
but earlier this week the invitee list included Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-La.),
Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), Joe Lieberman (ID-Conn.) and Susan Collins
(R-Maine.). The group met Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
Nelson said there is “a lot of concern about voting for a motion to proceed
without knowing well in advance what’s going to be within the merged bill.”
Reid has been working with the White House, Finance Chairman Max Baucus
(D-Mont.) and Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) — the No. 2 Democrat on the
Health, Education, Labor and Pensions panel — to merge the two committees’ bills.

10/22/2009
|
Amongst the Tea Partiers and the Left, business reps will say 'thank you'
While most of Louisiana will be tuned into the LSU-Auburn game,
those supportive of Senator Mary Landrieu’s stance on small business
in the national healthcare debate will be in Lafayette on Saturday, Oct.
24, 4:30 p.m. to show their support at a “town hall” sponsored by KLFY-TV,
announced David Huguenel and Devin Johnson, Louisiana Campaign for
Responsible Health Reform. U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, Dr. Mike Robichaux,
a physician and former state senator from Raceland, and Dr. Nellie August-
Prudhomme, a nurse and member of the LSUE clinical faculty, will
participate in the event at the Clifton Chenier Center. The two “healthcare dudes”—
David, a 24-year old self-employed republican with a pre-existing condition; and
Devin, a healthy 27-year old democrat employed by a small business—

and will be there with other Louisiana entrepreneurs who agree with Senator

Louisiana Small Business Leaders React to New Health Care Analysis
10/14/2009
|
The Louisiana Campaign for Responsible Health Reform,
which includes more than one-third of Louisiana’s Chambers
of Commerce, the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry,
and nearly 100 business owners, expressed concern that tax
increases, employer mandates, and a rigid ‘play-or-pay’ mentality
will be used to derail real Senate discussions about health care
cost containment, elimination of waste, healthcare choice, fairness,
increased competition and tort reform.
