SB 308: Email/Call Legislators Now To Vote for This Bill

6/8/2008

Vote in House Civil Law Committee is at 11 a.m.
Monday, June 9

SB 308 by Sen. Jack Donahue, the Daubert pre-trial legislation, will be
heard in the House Civil Law Committee Monday, June 9 at 11 a.m.
Our partners, the Louisiana Health Access Network and the Women's
Health Access Project, request that you e-mail, call, or talk to members
of the committee RIGHT NOW! SB 308 by Sen. Donahue would establish
a uniform system for expert testimony and methodologies used in civil court
cases. It does not change extensive substantive law. It does set a deadline
for pre-trial hearing on expert evidence, and requires a judge to give a written
or oral reason for qualifying or disqualifying an expert witness or methodology.
This legislation is similar to laws passed recently in Georgia, Mississippi,
and Michigan, and the standards to be used are the same as those used in
federal courts.

Karen Carter: Congress Round 2?

5/27/2008

Our Favorite Legislative Leader Looks Like A Congressional Candidate Again

You gotta love Karen Carter.

Just this Legislative Session, she's proven what she is made of, on the one hand helping her colleagues and the new Governor pass significant ethics reform, and then on the other, fighting to push back vouchers while once again championing the charter school movement.

When it comes to leadership, she gives you every reason to spell it K-A-R-E-N. So her friends are putting out the feelers for another Congressional race, holding a fundraiser this Thursday, May 29, at Morton's Steakhouse in New Orleans for $1250 per person.

Those ready to be in that number can contact David Huynh at (985) 519-2390 or david@karencarter.us

Subject: [Kreweoftruth] JINDAL ON VICE PRESIDENT SHORT LIST

Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain has short-listed Florida Governor Charles Crist and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal for his Vice Presidential choices. Being reported now on MSNBC and NYTimes. Our bets are on Bobby Jindal because he is so clean and Crist has rumored sexual baggage. Wow Bobby! Read about the comments!

Tim Burns HB 1198 looks like sour grapes rather than good law

Tim Burns( R) Mandeville got thumped in a recent election and so he introduced HB 1198, scheduled for hearing on the House floor Monday. This bill ‘Provides relative to unethical election practices by prohibiting certain false statements by candidates and push polling that includes any false statement, question, or information.”

On its face this would seem to be a bill allowing for cleaner and better discourse in elections. Unfortunately, the bill's full text never defines what a ‘false statement’ is nor does it identify who would determine what a ‘false statement’ is. But the bill DOES state that any candidate
who says something that someone else deems ‘false’ is now subject to fines and ethics charges. Furthermore, Burns’ bill seems to want to legislate across state lines, (which is in itself illegal) as it effects all federal elections except that of the President and Vice President.

Most federal candidates use national polling and mail services. So if this law ONLY applies to Louisiana…it would only effect Louisiana based pollsters, consultants, volunteers and
candidates...oh, and bloggers. Trying to exercise your First Amendment rights during a campaign might net you a 10K fine thanks to the wacky HB 1198 of Tim Burns.

DON'T BELIEVE THE MEDIA HYPE ABOUT HILLARY

5/9/2008

She's not getting out!

In the campaign's conference call to major donors, it was explained that when all
the politics over the Michigan and Florida delegates are counted by June 3, Hillary
will be in the lead with popular vote and behind by less than 100 delegate votes.
The girl is not going to quit, and you shouldn't either! So don't believe the media
hype, especially from CNN and MSNBC which almost seem to be ushering Hillary
out the door. This is the way it is going to play out: biased press until the end.
However, Hillary looks strong in the next two battles and she has been making
major inroads into Obama voters. Hillary Clinton is still convinced she
can win the nomination, so stay tuned! And keep the faith! Get more info by
joining the campaign website.

VOTE TO BAN STEM CELL RESEARCH COMING UP AT 2 P.M. TODAY

4/15/2008

Take the time to call and say to defeat HB 370

Rep. Cameron Henry's House Bill 370 that prevents public funding of life-saving stem cell research in Louisiana is expected to come up on the House floor Tuesday, April 15. Please contact your legislators and let them know your opposition to this dangerous legislation that places Louisiana outside of the mainstream once again.

Numerous public opinion polls over the years show a majority of Americans support this kind of important research. There are important scientific differences between human reproductive cloning, which scientists in Louisiana aren't doing, don't want to do and agree it should be banned, and somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), also known as therapeutic cloning. Only a handful of labs in the world are currently using SCNT techniques in human stem cell research, including a few in the U.S. but none in Louisiana. But if the scientific potential of SCNT is realized, why should Louisiana's emerging biotechnology sector have to eliminate itself from participating in potentially life-saving research? It doesn't make sense from a scientific standpoint or an economic development standpoint. Therapeutic cloning offers great promise for curing deadly and terrible diseases. SCNT saves lives; it doesn't create lives.

Call your legislator NOW at (225) 342-6945 and let them know you believe in the potential of research and that Louisiana should allow our researchers to pursue potential cures for diseases that afflict millions. Tell your legislators that you also believe in hope — the hope of parents and patients who so badly wish for cures and normal lives.

Just a note of warning about HB 370 by Rep. Henry, which would prohibit the use of public funds for human cloning.

4/7/2008

The bill is scheduled for the House Health and Welfare Committee on Wednesday morning, April 9.

Rep. Henry is working with Ann Bergeron, a legislative specialist for the Louisiana Right to Life Federation. Rep. Henry said he had been working the bill in its current form and has 56 co-authors. So recognize the reality of 56 co-authors (There are 105 members in the House.) But if this issue is important to you, you may want to expend some energy on the House Health & Welfare Committee and Rep. Henry over the next 36 hours.

Everyone wants in on Carter Peterson Fundraiser

3/25/2008

Donors encouraging another run for Congress?

Though a rumored field of possible candidates is emerging for Congressional District 2 to take on indicted incumbent Bill Jefferson, those with money are lining up for a fundraiser tomorrow for House Speaker Pro Tem Karen Carter Peterson. She was the candidate who went the distance against Dollar Bill in 2006, and those writing the checks tomorrow are not only helping her build a war chest, they want her to retire any outstanding debt and take a look at the 2nd district race again.

So far, the encouragement is coming from both those in Louisiana and many of national groups which lined up behind her earlier run for the Congressional seat. Though she is mum on the issue since last year, the Speaker Pro Tem's recent maneuvering in the state party has many talking that the race is not off the table.

The details on the fundraiser are:

Perhaps Timmie Needs Some Home Schooling?

2/16/2008

Jindal deserves some time to get it right, but his Chief of Staff doesn't appear to be on the same page

Anyone who has ever served in government knows there are supporters best left on the political side of the line. A great campaign manager doesn't always master the art of governance. Krewe of Truth is very proud of Louisiana's first brown-skinned Governor and believes he deserves a chance to get things right. He's setting a "gold standard" as he says for better government, even though we agree with Senator Cheryl Gray that the "gold standard" needs to go all the way down into local government. Councilwoman Shelley Midura of New Orleans in fact invited the Jindal Administration to do just that with its ethics reforms, and we agree.

Let the light shine in.

Yet, not all the Jindal appointees appear to understand that a gold standard negates a double standard. Since New Orleans has a disastrous Mayor and a sitting Congressman now made ineffective by greed and corruption, we have to believe in Governor Bobby Jindal. He has to get our city "off stupid", as the term goes. However, the recent media exposes about Jindal's Chief of Staff embarrassing missteps...both in misreporting campaign activities and now in distributing Hannah Montana tickets...seems to be cause for concern. Why let a staffer upset your apple cart, Mr. Jindal?

Rumors are circulating that the press will soon be doing a Freedom of Information Act request to verify that Mr. Timmie has also given out free Hornets tickets, used his position to move his children into the exclusive LSU Lab Secondary school ahead of the very long waiting line, and helped a family member secure a leadership position in the state's Republican party. As the ad says, "Not good, Larry. Not good."

Clinton Urges Voters to Bring Daughters and Granddaughters To Polls On Saturday in Louisiana

Support Hillary on wwl radio's on-line poll (left side of home page)

Presidential hopeful Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton urged voters in the Saturday, Feb. 9 Louisiana Democratic primary to bring their daughters and granddaughters with them as they make history in voting for the nation’s first woman president.

“This is an excellent time to educate our young girls about the importance of voting and to make them a part of this nation’s future,” said Maurice Durbin, Louisiana for Clinton. “We must underscore how every woman and girl in the United States should have the opportunity to live up to their God-given potential. Let’s open up the future for them.”

T-P Withdraws Lombard Endorsement

11/14/2007

Speaking today from her headquarters, Laurie White, the other candidate in the Criminal Court Judge, Section A, said,

"I applaud the newspaper on their courageous decision to take this difficult action in an important election. I surmise they did so because Ms. Lombard was less than truthful in answering questions about professional and ethical difficulties in her past. This afternoon I call on the Lombard campaign to recall a television ad claiming they have the endorsement of the Times Picayune."
